Back from the dead

Its good to be well again. Today I:

  • Worked more on simple ways in which people can verify the collected data of others while collecting their own info. The two I came up with are based upon having a photograph along with information such as species, phenophase, etc. This photograph can be referred to in order to verify this other information. 
    • The first idea is that after a citizen scientist has recorded information (taken a photograph, identified the phenophase), present them with their recorded photograph along with other photographs of the same location (or general photographs of the species), and ask them to put these photographs in correct order. For example, with phenophases this would mean from earliest (budding) to latest (leaves falling). Some of these photographs would be ones that the phenophase was already certain, some would be identified but not verified. By doing this sorting, we would be able to:
      • help validate whether the data the cit-scientist collected is correct (e.g. they labeled their collection as just bloomed, but placed the image after blooming).
      • help validate whether the data collected by other individuals is correct (e.g. the previous collector identified a photograph as one phase but it looks like another)
      • expose the data collector to what various phases look like, providing some training.
      • would allow the citizen scientist to say whether a collected photograph is of bad quality/not the correct location and the data should not be trusted.
    • Here is a basic mark-up of how these images could be presented for sorting. The images would be able to be arranged from least to most.

    • Similarly, a citizen scientist could be asked to match their collected information with that collected by others. For example, if someone identifies an invasive species, they would be asked to match their picture with other pictures of invasive species.

  • Got a firm understanding of what I can and can't do with a web app for doing my research. Previously we discussed that it would be worthwhile to have geocachers "in the wild" take part if this takes little-to-no effort. Creating a mobile webpage for testing my ideas is completely feasable. Geolocation data is accessable from the browser. The only caveat is that taking a photograph requires switching to the camera and then uploading the photo for most use cases.
Tomorrow I will:
  • Deploy my second geocache for real (the first one has yet to be approved, but that should happen really soon)
  • Break down the different ways a training-focused geocache can appear. Theses ways include
    • A course that is preconstructed
    • A site frequently visited and analyzed by a scientist or highly trained citizen scientist, with that data being used as truth for training.
