Saul asked me to be very concrete about my implementation needs before thinking more about the platform. He also warned me about choosing a platform that I cannot find much help on from others in the lab.
To think about this, I have broken down what I want to prove and then what those questions require:
- Ability of citizen scientists to perform previously difficult tasks.
- These include:
- Being trained in-situ
- Collecting along a line
- Collecting with tools.
- This requires:
- Basic. A few caches and some citizen scientists to run through them.
- Ability to guide citizen-scientists to a site...
- based upon:
- Site needs
- Citizen Scientist's ability
- This requires:
- Citizen scientists with their ability known through use of the system.
- Caches with changing goals, either based upon citizen-scientist's actions or in a wizard-of-oz manner.
- Devices to access information in real-time.
- Ability of citizen scientists to validate/verify information.
- This requires:
- Sites with previously collected data, either created by me or by other citizen scientists.
- Devices able to access this information in real-time.
Condensed and important thoughts:
- The major question for implementation is whether my work requires people performing tasks over an extended period of time. A quicker study would be easier if possible.
- If the study needs to be extended, how do we structure this and do we use devices people already own or lab devices.
- The difficult tasks problem does not require extended periods of time, but guiding citizen scientists and data verification might.
- Guiding: how can we know about citizen scientists in a quicker study in order to show that they can be guided based upon need and ability?
- Data Validation: can citizen scientists be shown to be good validators solely with data of my own? Or, do we need to incorporate the data collected by citizen scientists for validation?
